Rapture

Sole Salvation

Sole Salvation
Acrylic Collage using Joplin Tornado debris

On May 22, 2011, a monstrous EF5 Tornado hit my hometown Joplin, Missouri.  Many Joplin residents who lost their homes that day miraculously survived the damage.  Among the survivors was a former classmate of mine, known to her friends for her passion and large collection of shoes.  She had so many that she kept them in a separate closet, neatly stored and accessible.  As the tornado sirens sounded, she took refuge in an interior closet – her shoe closet.  When the tornado passed, her neighbors dug her out from beneath storm debris and found her alive and unhurt.  Her beloved shoes and shoeboxes had fallen on top and all around her, sheltering and protecting her from glass and house debris.  Her shoes saved her life!     Gaylen Whiteman (Gay Wilder)

My latest Paintings

Pok'in Around      This young girl seemed lost in thought as she poked around in the sand for hidden treasures and her dog frolicked nearby.  I wanted to join them in carefree beach wandering.

Island Girl     When I saw this young girl walking in the surf, the tune from ‘Girl from Ipanema’ started playing in my head”.  She’s still a bit young for that adult image, so I simply named her Island Girl.

 Emerson

Pond Visitor     Early one morning I looked out my window in time to see this great blue heron fly in and land in our little pond.  I observed him for sometime as he searched for his breakfast before taking flight again.

Spring Chick

Another chick I painted from many photos taken at the nursery.  This one was so industrious and totally focused on the business of eating!  Image 7x5, Framed to 10x8.  Original available at Artworks Gallery in April, $125.00.  Cards also available for $8.00 each.

Hot Chick

I painted this little chick after taking a gazillion picturres of the new baby chicks at the nursery.  This one seemed to want his picture painted!   Available in cards only, at Artworks Gallery in April, $8.00 each.

Fancy Flight

This was a fantasy painting, also for the corner Studio Spring Show.  A fun and magical bird flying high above the snowflakes.

Image is 6x6, framed to 11 1/2 x 11 1/2, $175.00

Snowbird

I painted Snowbird for the Spring Show at the Everett Corner Studio Gallery.  We had just had a heavy snow, and I thought to myself: "If I was going to make a snowbird (rather than a snowman), what would it look like? and what would I use for wings, feathers, etc.  I decided branches for wings, and nylon pastry basters for the crown of feathers, and of course, a carrot nose!  Too funny!!

Image is 6x6, framed to 11x11, $175.00

Sandpiper Shuffle

Sandpipers shuffle back and forth from shore to surf, following the ebb and flow of the tide, searching for tasty tidbits. I enjoyed painting this typical northwest shore scene. Gaylen Whiteman.

Framed Giclee Print, Canvas Giclee Print and cards now available.

Partner's for Life

This pair of Eagles landed in a tree outside my front door. The larger male landed first, and his mate flew to a position just below him. She seemed to lean into him for comfort. They remained in this pose together on the same tree branch for at least ten minutes. I’m sure they were a mating pair - Partner’s for Life. Gaylen Whiteman.

Original and cards available.

Daylily Reflections

An early morning rain had left my daylilies drenched. Looking at them through my window, I could almost feel the wetness of the water droplets. I’ve tried to capture that feeling in this painting. Gaylen Whiteman.

Original & Cards now available.
